I read in the last magazine an article, WHERE DO YOU FIND CHURCH? tantalizingly cryptic that in all truthfulness, I did not fully understand. It introduced a question & answer scenario the answers to which I do not recognise.

The author continues to relate the experience of a simple mass celebrated in the ‘Chapelle Sainte-Croix de la Cordelle’, established around 1150, beneath the wooded slopes of the hill town of Vézelay, a sanctuary loved and supported by their Christian community and others.

In ‘The church of St Michael and all Angels’, established around 1040, is where we celebrate the same faith and spirituality, loved and supported by our Christian community and others. Both these sanctuaries, each unaware of the other, would have conducted their services, in their own particular manner, language and style, for a thousand years, when all the seeds were sown.

Where of course they differ is that today the ‘Chapelle Sainte-Croix de la Cordelle’ is considered a treasured asset, whilst ‘St Michael and all Angels’ is considered but a worthless liability.

I’ll stop now, it’s getting late and I’ve still to put the sun to bed.
